Why and How I'm Doing a Home Reset Before the Holidays

This time of year always motivates me to “reset” the home. With the holidays just around the corner, decorations will be going up and more things will be coming into the home, so I like to start with a clean slate. It feels so much nicer decorating when everything is clear and in its place; it allows the decor to stand out instead of adding to the clutter.

Here’s how I’m “resetting” the home:

First, I put away all the Halloween decor. We didn’t have much to begin with but I made sure it’s all back in storage. A step further, I went through our fall storage bin and cleaned it out, donating what we didn’t use this year. I did leave up our fall items (branches, preserved leaves, pumpkins) which I do until Thanksgiving.

Next I did (and am still in the process of doing) a decluttering sweep. I’m going through toys and games especially, donating those items that the kids either grew out of or no longer play with. I plan to go through clothing as well. I call it a “sweep” because it’s not intense organizing, rather a scanning of obvious items that can be donated.

Another important aspect of the home reset is not bringing anything else in that’s not necessary; basically a spending pause. It’s hard to clear a space when things keep coming in.

Hopefully this helps you with resetting your home before the holidays! I keep it pretty simple purposefully because it can be a busy time of year to begin with, so be kind to yourself and do what you can. Even a spending pause can do wonders!
