3 Approachable Decluttering Methods to Implement Into Your Routine

3 approachable decluttering methods

Decluttering and organizing can feel SO daunting, especially if you feel like your home has gotten away from you and more things are coming in than going out. But it IS possible to get your calm home back, or create calm that you never quite felt you had. The solution is to take a bite sized approach to decluttering. When we break it up into small decluttering sessions that can easily fit into your day, it becomes more approachable, manageable and has a greater chance of leading to success. Here are some methods you can implement right now:

  1. The Set a Timer Method

Choose what amount of time works for you. I suggest anywhere between 5-15 mins. I know it seems small, but you will be surprised how that adds up in a week. That’s anywhere between 35mins to 1 hour 45 mins! And if you felt you were getting nowhere or not doing anything toward decluttering, 35 mins a week is better than nothing. It also gets your decluttering in motion!

  2. The (Very) Small Section at a Time Method

This approach is where you pick one very small area of the home. I’m talking a drawer or a shelf and you tackle one a day. By the end of the week you could have an entire dresser, pantry or linen closet organized! It feels much more approachable this way rather than sitting down to do an entire dresser in one decluttering session. Depending on drawer or shelf, this may only take 10-20 mins a day.

  3. The Sweep the Home Method

With this method, you grab a box and walk around the home gathering 5 items you can donate or dispose of each day. You can change the amount to whatever feels manageable to you. You can also get the whole family involved and have everyone fill up their own box (with their own items). Don’t forget to bring those items to the donation center at the end of the week so your donation pile doesn’t become another clutter source.

I have implemented all of these methods at different times depending on my goals. Do what feels manageable to you. Whatever gets you decluttering is the right method for you!
