Our Summer-Ready Back Deck

Our back deck is officially summer-ready! We got some new furniture, light fixtures and my favorite— the custom oversized planters filled with tall grasses that sets such a nice, cozy backdrop.

The sectional was such a great purchase— we come outside so much more now because it’s super comfortable, inviting and feels like an extension of the indoors. A nice big rug adds to the coziness and allows the kids and dog to have a place to play/lay when the deck is super hot.

Dan built these custom planters out of PVC so they won’t rot. The shelf inside is about 3/4 of the way up so that we didn't have to fill the entire planter with dirt, with holes drilled through for drainage. We placed a layer of rocks down so the drainage holes don’t get clogged, added in gardening soil and 2 types of ornamental grasses. The taller ones are supposed to grow to about 4ft. The planters are painted Benjamin Moore Black Satin, Aura Exterior, which is the same color as our side gate.
