3 Simple Formulas For Decorating the Fireplace Mantel
One of the most common requests I get is to help with recommendations on how to decorate above the fireplace mantel. It can be tricky to get it just right, but over the years I’ve noticed that I have some go-to, simple formulas that are almost always foolproof! I’m sharing 3 of those today in hopes it can help some of you get inspiration on how to style your mantel.
There are obviously many different ways to decorate the mantel and the most important thing is to do what makes YOU happy and love your home. These are just some ideas to help get you started if you’re stuck on what to do!
The trick is to think in triangles, and refrain from mixing too many small items. Also think balance, not perfect symmetry. Here are some ideas to get you started:
Start with a large mirror, in a shape of your choosing. Place a smaller piece of artwork in front, slightly overlapping the mirror. A plant or vase of florals or stems resting on some books for extra height complete this look.
Center a piece of artwork and flank it with candlesticks on one side and a plant on the other.
Sconces above a fireplace mantel can be both beautiful and functional. Place a piece of artwork in between and a decorative bowl or object below, slightly off centered.
If you have a TV above the mantel I often suggest just leaving it as is. Decorative pieces can disrupt the viewing and/or look too crowded. Sconces flanking it could be an option if you really want something.
