We have made a lot of progress in the playroom! It may not seem like much, but we did big things including creating an opening and installing a new window which makes such a difference in the lighting we now get in there. In today’s blog post we’re sharing the details on everything we’ve done so far!

You can take a look back at our playroom design plans here.

Floors

We had these floors done right when we moved into this home because there was carpet in here and we really wanted it out. We had them professionally installed but didn’t like the sealant they put on, so Dan sanded them down and put a new matte clear coat on.

Our floors are wide plank white oak hardwood.

Pass Through + French Doors

We actually did this during the library renovation. We created a passthrough between the library and playroom and added tall French doors. It adds such a better flow and it will be nice to be able to hang out in the library reading while the kids play in the playroom!

Window

This was huge for us! So much of our light hits on the side of our house with no windows, so our goal is to add them in. We started with the playroom and it really is a game changer for this space. It adds so much natural light.

It took us a while to decide what brand and type of window to go with but ultimately decided on Marvin. We both loved the sleek, clean look and ease of opening. We did the Marvin Elevate, casement narrow frame window with a transom.

Built-ins

Besides simply function, built-ins really add character to a space. I had so much fun designing the built-ins for the playroom! At first we built it to have big, square cubbies, but once they were done we decided it just didn’t feel right, so I went back and added mixed height shelving. It’s the perfect amount of playful for a playroom!

We stained the interior of the shelves walnut and painted the exterior the same white as the walls.

Still to come is the waterfall desk which will be in that space under the new window, connecting the bookshelves.

Molding

To create a finished look to the built-ins we added crown molding on that wall and wrapped the baseboards around the bottom.

Shiplap

To add texture to the wall between the built-ins and to tie in with the ceiling in the library, we did vertical ship lap.

Paint

The ceiling, walls and built-ins are painted Benjamin Moore White Dove in an eggshell finish, molding is White Dove in semi gloss.

Our next steps are to build the desk, install our new door (not sure whether we will stain it yet), order our light fixture and window treatments and build an activity table. Then the fun of furniture and decor install begins!!

Stay tuned for more!
