Our Family Room Makeover Reveal | Modern, Casual + Fun

This was one of the first projects we completed when we moved into our home! The floors were started as soon as we moved in. It has taken us so long to share it because it has been a continuous work-in-progress and I was waiting for everything to be perfect. And then I thought, ‘wait— the whole point of what we do is to show people to ENJOY the process and celebrate it.’ Creating a home is ever evolving, and that’s the fun of it. Yes, we have more plans for this room, but we love it right now and want to share what we have done so far. This is a reminder to myself included, celebrate your home in all its beautiful stages!
Okay, so a little about this room. It’s where we spend the most of our time. Dan’s must have was two full-size sofas which I’m SO happy we did. It gives enough room for company and at night we’re both able to lay down fully on each couch. For me, I just wanted a space that felt casual yet stylish and most of all fun. I also wanted to make sure Anchor had enough rug space to play, hence the smaller coffee table. We wanted it bright and airy, too.
If you want to go back and see our initial plans for the room you can read it in this post.
Our updates included:
Replacing flooring with real white oak wide plank hardwood
Installing recessed lighting
Installing dimmer switches
Replacing ceiling fan with chandelier
Painting ceiling and walls
Replacing crown mantle with reclaimed wood beam
Replacing outlets
Cut hole for mounted TV hidden wires

We created a little family vacation themed photo wall with thrifted frames arranged organically for a fun, casual look. You can read more about this photo wall here.
Art with a meaningful saying in a high-traffic area is a great way to remind yourself and your family of what’s important! Head here to see how I made this canvas banner.
With a small coffee table and a toddler in the house, simple styling is necessary. See my tips for styling a small coffee table here.
We replaced the mantle with a reclaimed wood beam we got locally. This ties in better with the overall style of the room— simple, natural and casual.
These ottomans provide extra seating and can also act as a footrest.
The throw pillows above are made by me! I love having a hand made, custom touch in every room and pillows are a great way to do that. I got that beautiful African mudcloth fabric from Etsy which I also took a small piece and framed for the mantle to tie the room together.
We LOVE this chandelier. It creates the most beautiful, whimsical shadows on the ceiling at night.
These specimen frames allow us to display something meaningful and special that can be changed out with the seasons if desired.
Baskets are both beautiful and functional. We store extra pillows and blankets in one, and the others house Anchor’s toys. Also, see what our media console looked like before we made it over.
More custom made pillows! A special thanks to my mom for helping me make these!
Again, thanks to my dad for all his help, time and guidance throughout this process!
Paint color is ‘White Dove’ by Benjamin Moore.
Coffee table is from Eclectic Goods.
