Kids' Coat Closet Makeover

Today I’m sharing our latest mini project— the kids’ entryway coat closet! I wanted to make the closet more functional for the kids, meaning they can reach everything they need and easily put their things away. What started as me just wanting to add a low peg rail turned into a closet overhaul (and we ended up updating our coat closet as well!).
Goal: create an organized coat closet that is functional for the kids to encourage independence.
Plan: add low peg rail for coats, backpacks and basket for hats and gloves; add 2 tiered shoe rack; update top shelf and rod.
Here’s how the closet looked before:
To make the closet more functional for the kids, Dan (and Anchor!) made the custom peg rail for coats, backpacks and I hung a basket for the kids to easily place gloves and hats. A two-tier shoe rack allows the boys to easily place their shoes on their own levels.
After we finished that part of the closet, the top original wire shelf just didn’t seem to fit in, so Dan suggested we update it. I immediately thought oak would look great against all the white in the closet and tie in with the floors. Dan created a simple oak shelf and rod where I place the less often used items like extra hats, gloves and off-season coats. This is also the closet we use for guests. The oak shelf and rod were also added to our coat closet.
As you can see in the before, this closet wasn’t completely functional or organized. Now that it serves a purpose and everything has a place, I am more motivated to keep it housing only the items we need and I was encouraged to go through and donate or move the other items that had been in there.
Along with having an organized closet, most importantly this will encourage independence and responsibility in the kids (hopefully!).
