In my previous blog post I spoke a bit about what a capsule home means to me, and today I’m sharing how to apply this mindset to the home for Christmas decorating.

Around the holidays it can feel especially enticing to go out and get all the newest holiday decorating items, but a few thoughtfully curated items can make a big impact, simplify your decorating and last throughout the years!

So, what is a capsule Christmas?

  • Curating thoughtful, timeless pieces

  • Quality items

  • Interchangeable pieces that can maybe be used for more than one season—like candles or throws that work for fall and winter, not necessarily holiday themed.

  • Intentional items that work well together

  • Not a lot to store away

Here are a few things to think about when curating your holiday home:

  • Know your holiday design style so you have a clear idea of what to purchase

  • Be aware of the areas of your home you want to decorate, and what can reasonably work in those spaces.

  • When shopping for holiday decor, shop with a list, your design style, and maybe some inspo photos to keep from impulse purchasing.

  • Keep your house size in mind, how much can fit into the space without looking cluttered and how big your storage area is for when this all needs to get put away for the season.

  • Choose natural over artificial when possible. A natural garland gets disposed of after the holidays whereas an artificial garland needs to be stored away (and those usually take up a full box!).

  • There are always exceptions and you should do what makes you happy!

Here are some items to consider curating for your Christmas home:

  • a wreath for your front door

  • candles that can be used anytime of year (real or flameless)

  • natural garland

  • thoughtful stockings that grow with your child over the years

  • pillows and throws that work for fall and winter

  • string lights

  • ribbon— a simple way to add a festive touch to wreaths, garland, Christmas trees or sconces.

  • meaningful ornaments collected over the years

  • natural materials and items such as dried orange slices, pinecones, branches, moss, small pine trees

  • little decorative pieces collected over time and that make sense in your home, lifestyle and holiday decor theme.
