Our Homemade Window Boxes

These window boxes make our house exterior feel complete (besides the need for a new roof 😜)!! When we took out the overgrown trees on this side of the house and decided to forgo shutters when we had the house painted, it just seemed too bare on this part of the house. So, we decided to add some window boxes! Dan made these by hand and honestly his handiwork never disappoints!

We came up with the design together and I knew I wanted them to be super dark to add some contrast to the house. We went with cedar wood that we got from Rings End and added a dark walnut stain. Then Dan finished it with a protectant coat of poly.

We inserted a plastic window box liner for the plants to go into so they aren’t directly in the box. This way each time I change up the containers I can take the insert out for easier planting. Plus, not having the dirt and water directly touching the inside of the box means they will stay in better shape.

We drilled out holes in the liner so the plants have good drainage. Dan made it so that the bottom of the window box had gaps between the slats for drainage as well.

Here you can see the plastic insert. It fits in just below so you can’t see it from the outside.
