Our Fall Front Porch + Tips to Get an Organic Look

I absolutely LOVE this season! Decorating with pumpkins, gourds and fall plants allows for so much creativity and color. I had so much fun decorating our front steps. Everything is from our local mom and pop nursery. The guy ringing me out said “wow you have quite the assortment here” 😂. And I have to say it was a workout getting these pumpkins into my car, then back out and up the pathway to the front steps! So, if you’re looking for some exercise, just decorate your front porch.

So first I swapped out the Russian sage that was in the main planters for this tall grass. I bought one plant and split it into two. I kept the vines that I had in there from the summer, just pruned them a bit. Then I added little pumpkins. I’m most proud of the little planters though! I love ornamental kale and cabbage this time of year, so I combined them with some mums and coordinating plant to create an interesting, simple planter. I love how they look added into the pumpkin mix!

Here are some tips and takeaways for an organic look:

-Try incorporating different fall plants besides just mums. Grasses, vines, ornamental kale and cabbage and other hearty flowering plants look great as fall decor. If you love mums, try mixing them in with some of these options for more organic interest.

-Mix up your pumpkins. Different colors, types and sizes help to create an organic, natural look. Mix in gourds and squashes.

-Stack, pile, bundle and play with orientation to create movement. Pumpkins look great when piled together. Turn some on their sides to make the scene look less stagnant. Stack flatter pumpkins on top of one another, pile medium pumpkins next to larger ones and place smaller pumpkins or gourds on top.

-Play with height. Tall grasses, planters hoisted up in plant stands and stacks of pumpkins make for a taller backdrop so there’s more visual interest.

-Steer clear from match-matchy symmetry. An organic look is natural, wild and artfully asymmetrical. You can have some symmetry like I did with the main planters, but make sure the rest of your setup is artfully organic.

-Pay attention to your pots and add in the unexpected. For an organic look, choose organic planters- imperfect and subdued tones. I added in a flyaway stick (I’m obsessed with them!) for added interest and it is such a welcoming scent. (I didn’t think to add it until after I took these photos, so you will only see it in one photo below).
